Condition_Lab is a Design Research Laboratory based within the School of Architecture at CUHK. Established in 2018, our primary focus is to improve people’s lives through design.

The Lab’s research resolves around designing socially responsible architectural prototypes. By working hand-in-hand with local partners on real sites, our aim is to develop projects that foster a better sense of community. The prototype acts as a vessel to generate new knowledge about how people inhabit their environment.

Our philosophy revolves around the paradox embedded into the word “condition”, as a noun it refers to a context, a circumstance, or a situation, while as a verb it implies change - to condition something based on an original state.

Re-Introducing Tangible Realities:
A new artisan retreat for Itaewon
Student: IP Man Lung Jackey

The aim of my thesis is to create an artisan retreat in Itaewon, Seoul, with short-term workshop or long-term apprenticeship programs for craftspeople/craft-making enthusiasts to learn from skilled craftsmen. On top of craft-teaching venues, it includes a dwelling space, i.e. an accommodation for this artisan community, where teachers and students alike, could embrace this re-introduced material culture as a new way of working, as well as a new way of living.

Envision an Urban Space Lab:
A New Architecture School in Seun Sangga
Student: LUN Ka Hei Ruth

This thesis project aspires to have an analysis and a critique on the current architectural education sys-tem in Seoul from the perspective of many western architectural theories and critiques, and attempt to design for an unconventional and radical school of architecture in the Seoul city. The first part will start with the introduction of an issue exist in the general context of architectural aca-demia and practices, zooming into the issue within the context of South Korea, and opportunity. Supported by an extensive study on the litera-ture, in search for the fundamentals for architecture, its education, ma-teriality and the relationship with the city. How those elements can inspire new form of education as suggested by different philosophers, educators, scholars and practitioners, with the case studies of an exceptional archi-tectural visionary – Cedric Price.
