Condition_Lab is a Design Research Laboratory based within the School of Architecture at CUHK. Established in 2018, our primary focus is to improve people’s lives through design.

The Lab’s research resolves around designing socially responsible architectural prototypes. By working hand-in-hand with local partners on real sites, our aim is to develop projects that foster a better sense of community. The prototype acts as a vessel to generate new knowledge about how people inhabit their environment.

Our philosophy revolves around the paradox embedded into the word “condition”, as a noun it refers to a context, a circumstance, or a situation, while as a verb it implies change - to condition something based on an original state.

Village Incubators: A New School Model for the Rural Minority Communities of Northern Dong, in Southern China

his is a Design/Research based project, looking at education and schools in rural villages in China, and rethinking a new paradigm that deals with existing “real” rural issues. Since the Chinese Economic Reform of 1978, most rural villages in China have been confronted with the threatening problem of “Village Hollowing”. By studying the current model of schools we propose to develop a Prototype design for a new typology of school that integrates multiple social aspects beyond simply providing education to children. According to the Ministry of Civil Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in 2018, there were more than 6.9 million left-behind children in China, 96% who were taken care by their grandparents. Furthermore, the 2017 statistics show that there were 240 million elderlies (>60 years old) in China of which 56% (approximately 130 million) were left behind in rural villages. In light of these issues, our ambition is to rethink the role of schools, as both an education hub and as a social building, and design an innovative cultural incubator. As the project aims to challenge the current model of schools in rural China, we will study a series of case study schools in different Dong villages, with the aim to investigate (quantitively and qualitatively) their role and understand how schools work within the community. For this purpose we have selected an area close Xinhuang Dong Autonomous County, crossing Hunan Province and Guizhou Province, known as the as the Northern Dong region. The specific area includes more than 10 villages along the county road, between two towns.
